Political chessboard after the elections in Italy

Italian elections have finished. Everyone claims victory. M5S says it is satisfacted because of the victory of the referendum. The center-left claims victories in Toscana, Puglia and Campania, while the center-right is happy for the victory in Marche. Now, we are going to see how the political chessboard will look like in Italy.

How is going to be the Italian political chessboard

On Sunday and Monday in Italy took place the regional elections and the constitutional referendum for the cut of parliamentarians. From the results, it seems that the government coalition has not been effectly losing. In fact, the center-right wished to conquere all the six regions called to the polls. In particular, it wished to win in Toscana, Puglia and Campania, the three strongholds of the center-left. However, it has not been so, and PD is exulting.

M5S has lost a lot of support at the regionals. The candidates have never gone past the 15% of the votes. However, the party is exulting for having obtained the approval on the referendum for the cut of parilamentarians. In fact, about the 70% of the Italian people voted for the cut. This is such a victory for M5S, because this target has always been the piece de resistance of the movement.

Foreign Minister and M5S senior executive Luigi Di Maio claims: “Let me tell you we succeeded again. People who tried to change this referendum into a vote against the government recieved a boomerang”.

PD, after having been frightened for the worst during the last polls, has been exulting after having succeeded in reconfirming itself in Toscana, Puglia and Campania. However, it lost in Marche.

PD’s leader Nicola Zingaretti claimed that, if the party lost in every region, he would loose the leadership. However, he now claims victory. He says: “We are very satisfacted. A result which facilities further reforms and cooperation among the government”.

The center-right has got a half defeat

The center-right has succeeded in maintaining Veneto and Liguria and in conquering Marche. Although Lega’s leader Matteo Salvini claims he had a big victory, it is a half defeat for him, both because he did not win in all the regions and because his Lega lost support among the center-right. In fact, in Veneto the center-right has been maintaining the power because Zaia has introduced himself with his own list, and not with Salvini’s. Moreover, in Marche the center-right has been winning thanks to the huge support for Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia.

Antonio Polito, editor for Corriere della Sera, says that a defeat for the left could bring political conseguences among the government, but this did not happen. Moreover, Polito claims that this elections have been demonstrating that Salvini is not the center-right absolute dominus anymore.

On the same side is YouTrend pollster Lorenzo Pregliasco, who claims that the results have strenghened the government and it can look for further legislatures. Moreover, he underlines that PD has got better than M5S, so it can have such more influence among the government.

Now, 15 regions out fo 20 are lead by the center-right. However, we can close by sdaying that the PD-M5S coalition still can go forward.
