On 20th and 21th of September there will be both the election day in some regions and the constitutional referendum in Italy. This referendum purposes the cut of parliamentarians in Rome, while the election day will take place in 1178 municipalities. Seven regions will vote for the new Governor. These are Campania, Liguria, Marche, Puglia, Veneto, Toscana and Valle d’Aosta.

People are called to the polls in Italy

Today and tomorrow, among the measures against the spread of coronavirus, people are called to the polls to vote for a constitutional referendum. In lots of regions there is also an election day. Seats are open today from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. . Masks will be mandatory, and there are sanizited pencils at the polls.

The constitutional referendum purposes the cut of the parilamentarians in Rome. Electors will face this question: “Do you agree with the text of the constitutional law concerning the changings to the articles 56, 57 and 59 of the Constitution about the reduction of the number of the parliamentarians?”.

Electors will express their preference by marking “yes” or “no”. If the “yes” wins, the three articles will be modified. If the “no” wins, nothing will change.

The factions are in disagreement on what is the best thing to vote

The Movimento 5 Stelle party and a part of the Lega party want the “yes” to win this vote. This referenum has started a huge debate between the two factions in Italy. In fact, parties who endorse the “yes”, M5S first of anyone else, suppose that there will be a big reductions of the cost of politics in the Country. Moreover, they suppose that a slenderer Parliament will be more efficient. However, the saving in terms of politics is not so huge as this people do think.

Parties which endorse the “no”, on the contrary, claim that the cut of the seats in Rome would increase the number of inhabitants for each parliamentarian. So would increase the dinstance between the population and its representatives.

Moreover, they suppose this reform will put democracy in danger. In fact, in their opinion, small regions as Umbria and Basilicata would have a cut of the 57% of the seats in Rome. So, some regions could become underrepresented.

This referendum does not need a quorum to achieve the approvation.

Election day is a political test for the Country

The vote for the regional elections assume a sort of political test. In fact, four regions out of seven where the polls are open are now lead by the center-left party. This four regions are Campania, Marche, Puglia and Toscana.

Here the polls show that the center-right party is on the lead right now. Moreover, if this result is correct, this score will get a huge advantage to Matteo Salvini’s Lega.
